Poverty is an ever-present and prevalent social reality that affects many people in society. But have attitudes to it changed over the centuries? ‘Attitudes to Poverty: Continuity and Change’ is a project established by the Glasgow Caledonian University, which offers some insight into attitudes to poverty from a historical perspective.

The Scottish Social Services Council (SSSC) is inviting College employees with responsibility for the planning, development and delivery of the care curriculum to two workshops.

Workshop A: for staff with responsibility for the Early Education curriculum, 23 September.

Workshop B: for staff with responsibility for the Social Care curriculum, 28 October 2010.

Tuesday November 2nd is the date when IRISS will hold the first in what we plan to be an annual event series — IRISS Forum 2010.

The title of this year's event, Challenging times, creative solutions, reflects our desire to look positively at what can be achieved despite financial constraint.

Equal, Connected and Contributing was a one-day event organised by the Scottish Consortium for Learning Disability in Perth on 10 June 2010. Audio recordings of the key speakers, the discussion panel and some of the parallel sessions are now available.

The keynote speakers were:

Duncan Mitchell, Professor of Health and Disability at Manchester Metropolitan University and Head of Clinical Services at Manchester Learning Disability Partnership.

Searching Google, or any other search engine for that matter, is a bit like pushing an ‘erupt’ button on a volcano: you enter a search term, and await the information giant to spew out its results, some of which will be very useful and others not so much. However, when you do come across a useful website, a really good way to save and/or share it is by using a social bookmarking tool.

The challenges associated with caring for someone who suffers with psychosis – a set of symptoms that include delusions, hallucinations and confused or disturbed thoughts – can be overwhelming. Psychosis is a symptom of schizophrenia, bipolar disorder and schizoaffective disorder, and can also be a symptom of dementia, some forms of personality disorder, epilepsy, Parkinson’s disease and other illnesses.

This is what the Institute for Research and Innovation in Social Services (IRISS) aims to champion with the development of its Evidence-informed Practice Portal and the Confidence Through Evidence Toolkit, launched in April 2010.
