A vacancy has arisen for an experienced social researcher with a strong interest in the theory and practice of knowledge exchange and experience of working in collaboration with non-academic partners, to work on a project funded by the ESRC, which aims to produce a stronger evidence base for those designing, providing and receiving health and social care for older people, and to ensure better sharing and effective use of this evidence base.

Alison Petch, Director at IRISS, is now offering her opinion on, and insight into, social work and social care related topics in a new IRISS blog entitled, Alison's Musings.

Her lively introductory post reflects on 'The art of the blog', – what triggers people to 'rattle the keyboard' as she eloquently puts it, and what writing blogs can achieve.

You can visit Alison's Musings at: http://blogs.iriss.org.uk/apmusings/. Watch this space for more engaging content. All comments welcome.

What do you need from IRISS?

We are at the stage of thinking about projects that we may run next year and we would like to hear from anyone who works for or uses social services. What do you think IRISS could be doing to support the social services workforce to improve outcomes for people who access support?

The only caveat is that the ideas should fit within our core themes: prevention (early years intervention, reshaping care for older people, reducing reoffending); integration; and personalisation: SDS.

All ideas are welcome by the 25th November.

Social media is used by an increasing number of people to communicate: from rating purchases on Amazon to sharing news, views and opinion through Twitter, to sharing photographs and video on Flickr and Youtube.

We commissioned Shirley Ayres of Aspire Knowledge to look at how social media is being used by service users and carers and to consider the current state of online marketplaces specialising in goods and services for services users and carers.
