Event Description: The LACSIG (Looked After Children’s Strategic Implementation Group) has embarked on a programme of work to support policy makers and practitioners in all disciplines. Sustained multi-disciplinary working is fundamental to making placements which will serve a child well throughout childhood and beyond. Meeting children’s needs is a complex and challenging task. When little might be known of the child’s origins, early experiences, ethnic and cultural background, the challenges multiply for professional staff, carers and adoptive parents.

This event offers a valuable opportunity to hear about practice perspectives and research from across the UK.
Event Description: With the majority of children entering care due to abuse and neglect, it is crucial to have comprehensive understanding of how maltreatment and neglect impact on looked after and adopted children and young people. It is equally important to understand children’s developmental needs and to structure interventions to minimise and address the adverse effects of maltreatment.

This conference will present the latest evidence from neuroscience and genetics concerning the effects of abuse and neglect on brain structure and function, as well as how to use this knowledge to improve outcomes.
Event Description: April 2011 saw the introduction of a raft of new legislation, statutory guidance and national minimum standards in England. A year on, this conference will explore some of the issues arising from this period and what this has meant for children in foster care, and what challenges this has brought for fostering service providers.

This conference will consider a range of diverse topics within this, inviting speakers with expertise on policy making and practice, including children’s experiences on being in foster care and the perspectives foster carers. It will allow delegates an opportunity to network and share best practice with the objective of delivering a fostering service fit for purpose in meeting children’s needs.
Event Description: Spirit possession is recognised worldwide across many cultures and by several religions. Spirit possession is often seen as an idiom of distress causing a change in behaviour and mental well being. Spirit possession is also included in the ICD 10 and DSM IV classifications of mental disorders, yet the extent to which it is recognised and / or discussed in clinical practice is less than we would expect, even in UK cities where there resides a diverse population.

This one day event will consider the critical themes and debates on spirit possession from an anthropological, social, psychological, medical and religious perspective using a range of illustrative case study, clinical practice, research and short film presentations.
